We caught up with Maya Nova, a jazz vocalist, songwriter and educator, at Nishville Jazz Festival where she performed alongside renowned saxophonist Rick Margitza.
Speak Your Mind! – Maya Nova
Bulgarian born Maya Nova is a soulful jazz vocalist, educator and songwriter, whose career has brought her around the world, between Europe, Asia and the United States.
Born into a family with great love for music and singing, Maya started playing classical guitar at 10 and later on took piano as her second instrument.
Upon graduating with Masters in Jazz & Pop Voice Major from National Music Academy in Bulgaria, she started appearing on the live music stage with several group projects: Mayrose Jazz Trio; funk bands – Chameleon and Infinity; pop band – Forte.
In 2009, Nova was a semi-finalist of the prestigious Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition performing at the 43rd Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
2010 saw the release of her debut album “Open” with a concert at the “Late Nite Show” series at the Esplanade Recital Hall, in Singapore.
In 2019, Maya Nova earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in jazz studies from Stony Brook University in New York.
Today, she resides in Singapore, while continuing to tour the three continents as a performer, teacher, and songwriter.
