Summer Boarding Courses (SBC) is part of Dukes Education, and was founded in 2009. SBC is the first, and currently only, summer school provider in the UK to have achieved a perfect 15 Areas of Strength in a British Council inspection. The inspections cover a wide range of areas including Care of Students, Safeguarding Under 18s, Teaching, Course Design, and Leisure Opportunities.

The EL Gazette publishes a league table based on these results, and SBC has been ranked Number 1 in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Program (ages 12-16)

Dukes Education and SBC offer at Eton College the exceptional summer courses, designed by top academics and taught by leading educators.

Academic Approach

At SBC, they go above and beyond the curriculum because they think that learning comes from doing, so our students are challenged to use and demonstrate new abilities in a friendly and encouraging setting.

By combining the university learning format of lectures and workshops, students have the chance to engage with theoretical principles as well as to develop the soft skills required outside of the classroom. SBC puts theory into practice by facilitating new opportunities to inherit key skills such as critical thinking, leadership, communication and teamwork – mirroring what is practiced every day in a professional work setting.

Each student is actively encouraged to take the initiative, think critically, and cooperate with others to solve problems in the classroom under the direction of Dukes’ amazing teachers.

At the end of the course a certificate is presented to each student along with a progress report.

Time to Shine

Every week when the entire school gathers, each student is given the motivating challenge of participating in a group presentation called Time to Shine.

One of the main reasons why this program is of such high quality is that SBC does not quantify achievement through grades and exams but provide students with a group challenge in which they can research a topic, find solutions to real problems and get to showcase their findings to a real audience in a nurturing and encouraging environment.

Time to Shine projects provide students with an opportunity to step out of their comfort zones by providing them with the chance to practice their public speaking skills in front of a larger audience. Students receive recognition and applause from their peers, which helps build confidence in tackling even greater challenges ahead.

Introduction To Politics & Economics

Deepen your knowledge of the political and economic world as you prepare for your future studies. By evaluating the ideologies and processes at the heart of various political systems, the Politics & Economics course at Eton will help you better grasp geopolitical trends in world politics.

What you will learn

• Develop an understanding of the different modes of power across the world.
• Learn about voting systems and forms of democracy.
• Develop a theoretical and practical understanding of Economics, the subject at the heart of Politics.
• Take part in the exciting How to Win an Election Time to Shine project, in which you and your classmates will devise a political campaign for election to the Student Council.
• Through fun and engaging lesson activities, develop and apply your 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, communication skills, collaborative skills, and original thinking.

General English

This immersive General English course develops an understanding of the English language through creative, student-centered lessons. The syllabus uses a combination of carefully selected course books and materials, which have been designed especially for 12 to 16 year-old learners by Dukes’ academic team.

Classes are multinational, and the focus on communication and collaboration helps you to build your confidence in using English in everyday life. The teachers will help you to put theory into practice.

By providing you with an exciting way to develop your use of the language, Dukes’ tutors have every opportunity to upgrade your language usage and to take your English to a whole new level.

What you will learn

• Through dynamic lessons with a communicative focus, you will boost your confidence in fluency as well as using more vocabulary and grammar.
• By taking part in a series of creative class activities, collaborative tasks and weekly class projects, you will also learn how to work effectively together and to apply your English in real-world scenarios.

Business

Learn the fundamentals of running a successful business of your own, at an institution like no other.

This Business program has been developed for the young business people of the future. In this course, students will improve their confidence in using English, by developing core business skills and through enhancing knowledge of the latest business trends.

Subjects in Business include: budgeting and finance, marketing, sustainability and growth, as well as the development of the English language skills necessary for success in business.

Students will work together as part of Dukes’ Time to Shine project to create and develop a business plan for a new start-up company, before delivering a product pitch to a panel of judges.

What you will learn

• Learn the techniques and strategies behind successful negotiations. With a focus on negotiation strategy, body language and communicative soft skills, gaining an understanding of how to get the upper hand in business dealings.
• Acquire the knowledge on designing and creating your own start-up company, complete with a full business plan which includes realistic operating costs and profit margins.
• Students will learn how businesses maximize their finances to operate at optimal financial profitability.
• Look at how businesses design their products, and how the marketing around this product is designed. By looking at iconic designs of some of the most successful products in history, you will learn how businesses give their products a marketable identity.

Whether you have an interest in business, marketing or finance, this course will give you the opportunity to apply your new skill sets to immersive business projects. This is perfect preparation for a young aspiring professional!

History

At Eton, this summer, study fascinating eras of history from medieval to early modern, as you learn how to analyze the past as a historian.

During the course you’ll take part in a group project where you will create a short documentary on how future generations will look back on the modern world, and you will develop key 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving, required at undergraduate level and beyond.

There’s no better place to build your experience as a historian than at Eton College this summer!

What you will learn

• Gain an understanding of the major eras in history, from medieval, through early modern history, to modern times.
• Learn techniques used by historians to effectively analyze the past.
• Develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the skills needed to study History at university level.
• Take part in our exciting ‘Our Place in History’ Time to Shine project, in which you and your classmates will produce a short history documentary to be shown in the Time to Shine ceremony.

Activities

With the SBC courses at Eton College, our students can fully immerse themselves in a wide range of fun activities. The social program enables new friendships to be made naturally and with ease.

Students can choose from participating in high-energy mainstream sports such as football, basketball, swimming and volleyball based at Eton College’s recently redeveloped Sports and Aquatics Centre. There are also more relaxing activities on offer such as baking, arts & crafts, drama and music workshops.

The college’s proximity to Eton and Windsor provides our students with the opportunity to spend some of their free time exploring the local area in small groups. In addition, during their time with SBC at Eton College, students will take part in several whole school events such as tournaments, debating, a talent show and a disco. This helps develop key team working and communication skills whilst, most importantly, having fun!

Excursions

During a two-week course, students will go on three fantastic excursions to famous UK cities and popular tourist destinations, providing the opportunity to see some of the UK’s most famous attractions and landmarks.

To ensure our young learners make the most from their trip, SBC’s dedicated team of staff accompany the students and provide a full itinerary for the day.

During their stay, all students will visit London at least once. The program frequently includes visits to other famous locations, including one of the most famous university cities in the world – Oxford.

Accommodation

The accommodation at Eton College comprises two secure and comfortable boarding houses – one for boys and one for girls.

Students will have their own single study bedroom, with shared bathroom facilities.

Both boarding houses have comfortable social spaces and facilities in which students can relax during House Time.

The accommodation is managed by a dedicated team of residential staff which is always available to provide high-quality pastoral support and remain on call 24 hours per day.
