Study in Denmark – From April 1st, new rules relating to work and residence permits came into effect for international students who have completed their studies in Denmark.
13-APR-2023 | The Danish parliament has approved a number of changes to the country’s immigration system to attract and retain more international talent, including the introduction of extended post-study work rights for non-EU international students.
Amendments to the Danish Aliens Act were passed “in the areas of work and study with the purpose of strengthening international recruitment.”
The Danish Immigration Service confirmed that from April 1st non-EU students who complete a bachelor, master’s or PhD program in Denmark will automatically be granted a period of three years of post-study work rights after graduation. Previously, international students in Denmark were given a period of six months after graduation to try and find a job.
Students from EU countries do not need a visa to work in Denmark.
Other changes introduced alongside the post-study work rights include a new Fast Track scheme for workers with an annual salary above 50,000 euros, expansion of a list of shortage professions and a new Start-Up Denmark visa track for entrepreneurs.
The expansion of post-study work rights follows the recently announced plan of educational reforms, including an expansion of English-taught degrees in areas of high demand for specialized labor, and shortened master’s programs.
According to EU Commission’s data on the labor market in Denmark, in 2022, 42 per cent of companies had reported challenges in recruiting workers, in particular for engineers and specialists in the IT, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and financial sectors, as well as doctors and nurses.
