Malta for Active Learners

School

Founded in 1985, the IELS (Institute of English Language Studies) is located in the heart of Sliema, near the coast and what many consider Malta’s most beautiful promenade. Sliema is renowned as the financial and tourist center of Malta.

The school building is strategically positioned in a prestigious and quieter part of the city. Just a 3-minute walk from the school along the promenade, you’ll find boat taxi stations for easy travel to the popular islands of Gozo and Comino or any other city in Malta. Bus stops are also nearby, with a 10-minute ride taking you to the enchanting city of Valletta and a 30-minute journey to the medieval jewel, Mdina.

The spacious, modern school building is fully air-conditioned and features a bookstore, internet café, a large common area for socializing, a terrace, and bright classrooms equipped with interactive (smart board) whiteboards.

Classes take place in the modern school building with 95 well-equipped, air-conditioned classrooms, and students have access to various common areas for studying and socializing. Free WiFi is available in all areas of the school building.

IELS also owns the ultra-modern Day’s Inn hotel residence, which we describe in the following section.

Accreditation

The accreditations and reputation of IELS in Malta are impressive. IELS is a founding member of FELTOM (Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations Malta), responsible for assessing the quality and overseeing the work of English language teachers and schools. Additionally, the school is accredited by the Maltese state’s EFL Monitoring Board.

IELS is also affiliated with the University of Cambridge as an ESOL teacher training center and is the only school in Malta that offers both Cambridge CELTA and DELTA teacher training courses, two of the most sought after and distinguished qualifications that an English language teacher can attain.

Program

The active MALTA program is tailored for individual adults and is conducted by a modern and highly reputable school in Malta. It involves English language classes of various types and intensities, along with a rich program of extracurricular activities. Coupled with excellent accommodation at Day’s Inn, just a three-minute walk from the school, it’s clear why this is the most sought-after active program.

Courses

The classes take place in international groups with a maximum of 15 students per group. On the first day, participants take a diagnostic test, after which they are assigned to classes according to their proficiency level. In addition to the language proficiency level, the criterion for forming classes is age, ensuring that each group consists of participants of similar knowledge and age.

The class schedule is either 20 or 30 hours per week (depending on the selected course type), and the teaching method is communicative. Each student actively participates in interactive group work or pair work. Participants receive a textbook and accompanying materials (included in the price), and at the end of the course, they receive a certificate indicating the achieved proficiency level.

You can choose from the following types of courses:

1. Standard (20 hours per week)
2. Intensive (30 hours per week)
3. Preparation for the IELTS exam (30 hours per week) – prerequisite for enrollment: at least a B1 level of English proficiency
4. Preparation for Cambridge exams (30 hours per week) – the program lasts a minimum of 6 weeks, and to enroll, your proficiency should be at least at the B2 level; the price for this program is provided upon request after completing the inquiry/application
5. Business English (20 hours per week) – prerequisite for enrollment: at least a B1 level of English proficiency
6. Academic English (30 hours per week) – prerequisite for enrollment: at least a B1 level of English proficiency

Activities

The Verbalists Language Network’s active programs are highly popular due to their rich content. The appealing extracurricular activities and excursions are carefully chosen to provide participants with an ideal blend of learning and active relaxation during their educational journey. In this regard, when evaluating the quality and comparing the prices of various language learning options, it’s essential to consider the significant savings achieved compared to basic language education variations or the option of purchasing different extracurricular activities and excursions separately from the active MALTA program, which already includes substantial discounts on activity prices.

Below, we present an example of weekly activities and excursions included in the price or available with a specific surcharge. The exact plan of extracurricular activities is provided on a weekly basis at the school.

Accommodation

Day’s Inn Hotel

This modern school residence/hotel, offering excellent accommodation, is located less than a 5-minute walk from the school building. It features 100 rooms equipped like studio apartments and a small rooftop pool with a sun terrace. The rooms are air-conditioned, equipped with satellite TV, and have a bathroom. The hotel lobby also serves as a free Wi-Fi zone.

Accommodation in a double or triple room is shared with a student from the same college. A limited number of single rooms are available at an additional cost.

Stay is based on room only. The supplement for breakfast is 49 euros, and for half-board (breakfast and dinner), it’s 203 euros per week; dinner only is 154 euros per week.

NOTE: Due to its excellent quality, safe location, and proximity to the school and promenade, spaces in the Day’s Inn Hotel fill up quickly. Verbalisti language network, as a long-term exclusive partner of the IELS institute, reserves a certain number of beds exclusively for its participants every year. However, these accommodations are usually booked early in the year, so we recommend early enrollment.

Pricing & Program Dates

Departures: June 14, 21, and 28; July 5, 12, 19, and 26; and August 2, 9, and 16. For preparation for the Cambridge exams (Levels B2 and C1): 27 Jan, 28 Apr, and 07 Jul.

Note: This is an individual language program for adults and does not include organized group travel and group leader services. Although the program is individual, a Verbalists Language Network group leader stays in the same accommodation where active MALTA program participants are located.

Considering that the learning effects of a foreign language significantly improve in the third and fourth weeks of study, we have negotiated proportionally lower prices for longer courses with the IELS institute for our participants. For 3-week programs, you save 150 euros, and for 4-week programs, the savings are as much as 300 euros.

The program options with 30 hours per week include the highest discount, and therefore, they offer the greatest value.
