Studying in Canada: Canada increases financial criteria for international student applicants

Studying in Canada just became more financially stringent as the country introduces new rules requiring international students to demonstrate increased funds.

07–DEC–2023 | Starting January 2024, international students aiming to study in Canada must demonstrate that they have $20,635, in addition to their first-year tuition and travel costs, to secure a study permit.

The Canadian Government cautions about potential visa limits if schools fail to adequately support students, striving to prevent misuse in the international student program. Canada emphasizes this change to ensure students grasp the real cost of living, updating a cost-of-living requirement stagnant at $10,000 since the early 2000s.

International students can continue working over 20 hours per week until April 30, 2024, with a potential permanent increase to 30 hours, but full-time work is off the table.

These changes are part of Canada’s recent efforts to combat wrongdoing in international education, addressing fraud prevention in admission letters. Canada instructs institutions to admit international students only if housing is available, acknowledging the country’s housing crisis and demanding proper health and academic support.

Expressing dissatisfaction with institutions functioning as diploma factories, Canada threatens visa limitations if issues aren’t resolved by September 2024, underscoring the government’s readiness to intervene decisively.
