23–APR–2026 | Today we celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday, a perfect moment to reflect on how one writer from England came to belong to the whole world. Shakespeare may have been born in Stratford-upon-Avon, but his words, stories, and characters have travelled far beyond Britain, reaching readers, students, and audiences across generations and continents. That is exactly why his legacy connects so naturally with our My LONDON program. 🇬🇧🌍
Here are our Verbalists students during their visit to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, one of London’s most inspiring cultural landmarks. Experiences like this show that learning English is not just about language lessons. Special stories connected with Shakespeare:
The exact spelling of Shakespeare’s name was not fixed in his time, and several variations of his signature exist, which was quite common in the 16th and 17th centuries. He was not only a playwright but also an actor and a shareholder in the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, the company that later became the King’s Men. In his will, he famously left his wife Anne Hathaway his “second-best bed,” which has often been debated by historians, as it may have held special meaning rather than being an insult.
There are many more interesting details. Shakespeare introduced or popularized hundreds of words and expressions still used today, such as “break the ice,” “wild-goose chase,” and “heart of gold.” His plays have been translated into more languages than any other writer’s works. Although he is known as the greatest writer in English, much of his life remains a mystery, which continues to fascinate scholars and readers alike.
