Germany’s popularity among international students, especially in South Asia, is on the rise. In the 2022/23 academic year, the country reached a record of 370,000 international students. Chancellor Olaf Scholz highlights the need for “young and well-qualified” international students for the country’s economic development.

Despite a 0.1% economic contraction in the third quarter of 2023, Germany remains highly attractive to prospective students. The ICEF 2023 Agent Voice survey indicates strong global interest, with Germany projected for significant growth.

Affordable fees at public institutions and private universities, which provide up to a 30% tuition discount through scholarships, contribute to this appeal. The quick visa process is another factor, making studying in Germany a preferred choice for students.

The German government will invest €120 million until 2028, with the aim to recruit and qualify international students and graduates as skilled workers for its job market. This initiative, known as the ‘Campus Initiative for International Specialists,’ supports students throughout their studies and transition to the job market.

Germany is the third most popular country in the world for students to study. Out of the students who got study visas in 2015, over 60% were still in Germany five years later. This means many students choose to stay. Only Canada has a similar rate, and Germany is ahead of Australia, Estonia, and New Zealand in this aspect.

Agents note that Germany’s welcoming atmosphere, along with the attractive price point and post-education opportunities, makes it more appealing than alternatives. Some students are turning away from the United Kingdom due to changes in spouse visas, contributing to Germany’s increasing popularity, especially among postgraduate students.
