A Language for Every Strange and Beautiful Place – Socotra, also spelled Soqotra, is a small archipelago of four islands in the Indian Ocean.
The largest island, also called Socotra, makes up about 95% of the landmass of the archipelago. It lies some 240 kilometers east of the Horn of Africa and 380 kilometers south of the Arabian Peninsula. The island is very isolated and, through the process of speciation, a third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet. It has been described as the most alien-looking place on Earth. The island measures 132 kilometers in length and 49.7 kilometers in width. Socotra is part of the Republic of Yemen.
Places like Socotra remind us how surprising the world still is. Even in an age when almost every destination can be searched, mapped, and photographed, some places remain difficult to reduce to simple descriptions. They invite us to look more carefully, listen more openly, and understand more than what appears in front of us.
That is also one of the reasons we learn languages. A new language does not simply help us ask for directions or order a meal. It helps us notice what a place calls itself, how people describe their own world, and what gets lost when we only look from the outside.
Like Socotra itself, language opens the door to what is rare, different, and not immediately understood. It brings us closer to the people, stories, and meanings behind the view.
